Question Cash rested on a short premise: one question a day, the closest answer found the fastest, a click on the advert to confirm, and a thousand euros for the winner. The whole appeal of the game lay in its speed, and that is precisely what made it a technical problem.

Every answer arrived inside the same brief window, since the game rewarded speed. A rush of that shape cannot be smoothed out: there is no average traffic, only a daily spike the app had to absorb without losing a single answer. Losing the winner’s would have been enough to discredit the game.

The winner had to be named in under a minute. That constraint ruled out separating the players by hand, or later on: the accuracy of the answers and their order of arrival had to be sorted at the very moment they came in.

Comment c'est construitHow it is built

The ranking rested on two criteria only: the gap between the answer given and the right one, and speed. The click on the advert confirmed the entry. No human judgement entered into naming the winner, which was the condition for doing it in under a minute.

Around that mechanism, an administration area held the questions, and the rest of the app handled the accounts: sign-up, account personalisation, tracking of answers. The question of the day came from that administration area, not from the app’s code.

Ce que j'en retiensWhat I take from it

Developing this app was a genuine technical challenge, and it is one of the few projects where I can name which one: it was the first time an app had to absorb such a rush of answers in so short a time, and name the winner automatically in under a minute.

What I take from it is that a game of speed imposes its constraint on the server before it imposes it on the player. The premise could be stated in one sentence; holding it up every day was far less simple.
