Le Petit Rien sold handmade nursery goods, at first from a plain Facebook page. The problem was not showing the products — a Facebook page does that — but being able to sell them: a basket, a payment, stock levels, and nobody technical to look after any of it.

A craft shop cannot depend on a developer to put an item online. Everything was made by hand, and the pace of publishing followed the pace of making. If every listing, every stock level and every promotion has to go through a contractor, the shop is not being run: it is up to date whenever the contractor is free.

Second difficulty: moving from a page to a shop means changing trade. On a page, a sale is handled by hand, one exchange at a time. In a shop it has to close with nobody there, at night and on Sundays, otherwise the site merely shifts the work about instead of reducing it.

Comment c'est construitHow it is built

The shop was built on Magento, and the admin side was pared back to what the brand actually had to do: put an item online, correct a stock level, open a discount code. A complete admin nobody dares open is worth less than a narrow one that gets used.

The product page was drawn bespoke rather than taken from a standard template, because a handmade item is not described in the way a mass-produced one is. The rest of the chain — the basket, the discount codes, the payment gateway and PayPal — was put in place to run end to end with no manual step.

Ce que j'en retiensWhat I take from it

This project taught me to judge a shop by its admin screens rather than by its shopfront. The shopfront a customer sees once; the admin the brand opens every day. A narrow, comprehensible interface is of more use than a complete settings panel of which only three buttons are ever pressed.

The other point that still holds: as long as one link in the sale needs a human gesture, the shop is not finished. Basket, payment, confirmation — one of them calling for a follow-up is enough to push the work back, in the evening, onto the person doing the making.
