En 2015, Bouchara sortait d’une restructuration interne : la plupart des magasins avaient fermé et le site devenait le canal principal de l’enseigne. Il ne s’agissait donc pas d’ajouter des fonctionnalités à une boutique parmi d’autres, mais de reprendre de fond en comble celle par laquelle l’enseigne allait désormais vendre.In 2015, Bouchara was coming out of an internal restructuring: most of the shops had closed and the website was becoming the brand’s main channel. So this was not a matter of adding features to one shop among many, but of rebuilding from top to bottom the one through which the brand would now be selling.

Le défi techniqueThe technical challenge

Vingt mille références ne se recopient pas. Chacune porte un prix, des déclinaisons, des images et une place dans un rayon, et une boutique qui en perd une partie en route perd des ventes sans que personne s’en aperçoive tout de suite. La migration vers la dernière version de Magento était le vrai défi du projet, et c’était un défi de données avant d’être un défi de code.Twenty thousand product references cannot simply be copied across. Each one carries a price, variants, images and a place in a department, and a shop that loses some of them along the way loses sales without anyone noticing straight away. Migrating to the latest version of Magento was the real challenge of the project, and it was a data challenge before it was a code one.

S’y ajoutait le passé des clients. Les anciens comptes et l’historique des commandes devaient suivre, parce qu’un client qui retrouve ses commandes retrouve une maison qu’il connaît, alors qu’un client dont le compte a disparu est un client à reconquérir. Reprendre l’existant était une contrainte au moins aussi forte que la refonte elle-même.On top of that came the customers’ own past. The old accounts and the order history had to come across, because a customer who finds their orders again finds a place they know, whereas a customer whose account has vanished is a customer to win back. Carrying the existing data over was a constraint at least as strong as the rebuild itself.

Comment c'est construitHow it is built

Le chantier s’est mené en deux couches séparées. D’un côté la reprise de l’existant — le catalogue, les comptes clients, l’historique des commandes — traitée pour elle-même, avant toute question d’apparence. De l’autre le site, dont le design a été entièrement repensé et auquel les rubriques de service ont été ajoutées.The work was carried out in two separate layers. On one side, bringing over what already existed — the catalogue, the customer accounts, the order history — handled on its own terms, before any question of appearance. On the other, the site itself, whose design was rethought entirely and to which the service sections were added.

Le catalogue a été modélisé selon les formes que prenaient réellement les articles : des produits simples, des produits configurables dont l’acheteur retient une déclinaison, et des produits vendus en lot. Les trois coexistent dans la même boutique, et c’est cette coexistence, plus que le volume, qui dicte la façon de ranger un catalogue de cette taille.The catalogue was modelled along the forms the articles actually took: simple products, configurable products where the buyer picks a variant, and products sold in sets. The three coexist in the same shop, and it is that coexistence, more than the sheer volume, that dictates how a catalogue of this size is filed.

Le paiement passait par un terminal de paiement bancaire, raccordé à la boutique pour que la commande et l’encaissement ne fassent qu’un seul mouvement.Payment went through a bank payment terminal, wired into the shop so that the order and the charge formed a single movement.

Ce que j'en retiensWhat I take from it

Ce que je retiens de Bouchara, c’est qu’une migration est moins un travail de développement qu’un travail d’inventaire. Le code se réécrit ; une référence perdue, personne ne la voit avant qu’un client la cherche. J’y ai passé plus de temps à comparer deux états d’une base qu’à écrire des gabarits, et je le referais.What I take from Bouchara is that a migration is less a development job than a stocktaking job. Code can be rewritten; a lost product reference goes unnoticed until a customer looks for it. I spent more time there comparing two states of a database than writing templates, and I would do it again.

L’autre leçon tient à l’historique des commandes. On le présente volontiers comme une donnée technique à reprendre ; c’est en réalité la mémoire que le client a de l’enseigne. Depuis, je traite la reprise des comptes et des commandes comme une partie du périmètre, jamais comme une option de fin de projet.The other lesson concerns the order history. It is readily presented as a technical dataset to be carried over; in reality it is the memory the customer has of the brand. Since then I have treated the migration of accounts and orders as part of the scope, never as an end-of-project option.
